Do you have dark spots in your diamond?

There are so many things to know about diamonds and knowing about inclusions is an important one of them.

Because what are inclusions? and why are they so super important when we are pricing diamonds?

We want a diamond to be as clear as possible, and that also means that we want the diamond to be as pure as possible, without any impurities.

A diamond without impurities are graded as F for Flawless and is extremely rare and therefore extremely pricy. So normally normal people like me, will have to accept some inclusions in a diamond.

The GIA grading for inclusions are

  • F Flawless
  • VVS 1 and 2, which means that an experienced diamond grader has difficulties finding the inclusions under a 10 x loupe.
  • VS 1 and 2, an experienced diamond grader has some difficulties finding the inclusions
  • SI 1,2 and 3 and experienced graders can easily find the inclusions using a diamond loupe
  • I 1, 2 and 3 the inclusions are visible without a diamond loupe

An inclusion or impurity can be many things, and they are all named in different ways.

The inclusions will be described and drawn on the certificate of your diamond

You will be able to identify some of the inclusions with a diamond loupe which magnifies 10 times, but sometimes you will need a microscope to magnify the diamond up to 25 times

It is also important where the inclusion or impurity is located

The photo talks for itself. You don’t want a diamond with a visible inclusion in the middle of the diamond. Also because diamond reflects everything, also inclusions. So a badly positioned inclusion can look as if there are 100 inclusions. Only by the reflections. Now I am sure you will start looking at your diamonds in an other way.
